Carbon Contracts: What Makes a Difference?

What Canadian industry needs to know about the federal government’s
approach to carbon contracts for difference

A webinar hosted by Clean Prosperity

Uncertainty about the future of Canada’s carbon price is holding up big investments in decarbonization. In the 2023 Federal Budget, the government announced that it would consult on the development of a broad-based approach to carbon contracts for difference (CCfDs) to help support investment. At the same time, bespoke CCfDs are being pursued through the Canada Growth Fund.

CCfDs act like an insurance policy on the carbon price for industry. Clean Prosperity has been a leading advocate for the fast deployment of CCfDs to grow the low-carbon economy and help Canada compete in a rapidly decarbonizing world.

On October 19, 2023, Clean Prosperity hosted a webinar exploring the state of the CCfD policy conversation in Canada. How are broad-based CCfDs different from those being pursued by the Canada Growth Fund? What are the remaining hurdles to their implementation? And how can the design features of CCfDs help de-risk big decarbonization projects?
